Lesson 2 Step 9 Stanley von Herschaur was robbed. People are going to die. Stanley was one pissed off customer to have been screwed like this by the stamp-collecting community. Maybe just the people that he had spoken to, clearly not everyone deserved 'death', maybe just deserved a hell of a beating. He knows what will happen, today he's drunk off his ass, tomorrow he's a committed revolutionary ready to bring about another Holocaust. Stanley was happy about one thing when the darkness enveloped his soul into a lust for vengeance, he whispered to the open bottle of Johnny Walker,... "someone's gonna get it". The hangover punched him in the face that morning, the name of the man who had hired thieve's to raid the house flashed up to him, like a bullet delivered to the back of his dizzy head. Rosenberg. A greedy swindler with a devilish face. Yitzvah. An old humpback with beady little eyes. Yitzvah Rosenberg!! The man he had spoken to once before, the one so greedy to clutch for Stanley's fortune that he offered thirty-five hundred dollars for the Austrian Red Mercury, the single most expensive stamp in Stanley's collection that was worth about ninety-three hundred dollars. Stanley stumbled around. He walked up to the closet, slid it's doors open and dropped to his knees. The wooden floor board could be displaced. He clawed at the floor for a minute until he discovered the board that was split in two pieces, removing it gave way to the steel lever that was installed to open the secret cabinet behind the clothes rack. He did it, got up to his feet and pushed the clothe's hangers aside and threw both arms forward as if to receive Christ's mercy right there and then. Stanley made his way outside. All dressed up, the trench coat concealed the boom-stick he held underneath. He knew where to go now. Yitzvah sat at his desk looking through his newly acquired fortune. Suddenly the door was pushed open and Stanley walked through.

9th Amendment

History of the 9th Amendment The 9th Amendment reads â€Å"The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people. † In other words, people retain more rights than the ones listed in the Constitution. The 9th amendment is one the least referred to Amendments in decisions of the Supreme Court. People also say it is one of the most confusing, controversial and misunderstood Amendments to the Constitution.The 9th Amendment has an interesting background. When the Constitution was written by the Constitutional Convention and submitted to the States for ratification, many began to argue that the Constitution did not protect the basic natural rights of the citizens. The Anti-Federalist Party (Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, and George Mason) claimed that unless certain rights were written down in a Bill of Rights, the government would take over these rights and abuse people.Meanwhile, people in the Federalist Party, including George Washington, John Adams, James Madison and Alexander Hamilton, believed that the Constitution didn’t give the government the authority to do anything that wasn’t stated in it. Therefore, they concluded that the Bill of Rights was not only unnecessary, but even potentially dangerous.They believed that if specific rights were listed to be protected from government involvement, people would get the idea that the government controlled the rights that were excluded. After hearing both sides of the argument, James Madison took a stand and tried coming up with a resolution to the problem even though he agreed more with the Federalists. On June 8, 1789, he brought up to Congress a list of his own suggested amendments to Congress.Among one of the Amendments, was a solution that was later called the 9th Amendment. His solution was worded like this: â€Å"The exceptions here or elsewhere in the constitution, made in favor of particular rights, shall not b e so construed as to diminish the just importance of other rights retained by the people; or as to enlarge the powers delegated by the constitution; but either as actual limitations of such powers, or as inserted merely for greater caution.The Congress accepted James Madison’s solution, but not without some final touches before it was added to the Constitution. Congress simplified the wording so that it could be understood better by the people. In the end, the Anti-Federalists won the argument and the Bill of Rights was added to the Constitution. The intersection of dominant ideologies of race, class, and gender are important in shaping my social location and experiences. By exercising my sociological imagination (Mills, 1959), I will argue how my social location as an Asian American woman with a working class background has worked separately and together to influence how I behave, how others treat and view me, and how I understand the world. Like a newly introduced disease with no cure the Roman fever attacked the first generation with full force, therefore, they experienced it harshly. After a generation, the disease was still strong and therefore they â€Å"use to be guarded†(29). Though as technology progressed as well as medical knowledge, the Roman fever is not as big of a threat to the current generation anymore. This idea of the Roman fever parallels to the standards of behaviors, which have changed from one generation to the next. In the older generations they took care of their problems in a more wicked way than the earlier generations. For example, â€Å"Great- aunt Harriet†¦ who was supposed to have sent her young sister out to the Forum after sunset to gather†¦ flowers†¦But she really sent her because they were in love with the same man† (50-55). As a result, Harriet killed her sister. This parallels to the Roman Fever when it was severe. When it comes to Mrs. Slade and Mrs. Ansely’s they differ in how they take action to their jealousy. Unlike, Harriet who killed her enemy, Mrs. Slade just causes Mrs. Ansely to get a less severe sickness. Nevertheless, this does not exclude the fact that both generations take a similar approach in which they hurt their enemy’s, a clear instance of how history is repeating. Both generations continue to be very similar in a number of ways. First of all, is Grace Ansley’s daughter, Barbara Ansley, who resembles Alida Slande. Mrs. Slade was â€Å"more effective- [and] had more edge† (22), just as Barbara does. Jenny Slade on the other had is more like Grace Ansley who â€Å"was [an] extremely pretty girl who somehow made youth and prettiness seem as safe as their absence† (22). Both young women held a similarity to the women of the older generation, in which all women from both generations were â€Å"sentimental† (15). Therefore, by making both generations so parallel Wharton is suggesting that the daughter’s life will be a rewrite their mother’s lives. Overall, the idea that history will be repeated in subsequent generations further expands the meaning of the title â€Å"Roman Fever†. Through the realization that all generation have something in common, the reader is able to note, the role the Roman fever has throughout the plot. First, the Roman fever allowed Aunt Harriet to get rid of her sister, who loved the same man as she did. In the next generation, Mrs. Slade took advantage of the Roman fever, in her attempt to get Mrs. Ansley sick so she would not get in the way of her marriage. The fever continues into the next generation with Mrs. Slande’s burning feverous jealousy towards Barbara’s free spirit, which Jenny does not hold. Therefore, the Roman fever will continue to create the story, and follow future generations, as they play back history.
